A Manifesto for Authenticity
What does a country’s brand truly mean, and how can Romania find its authentic voice in a globalized world? In his new book, “Brand Romania. The great escape from Miorița and Dracula”, Bogdan Brînzaș, the founder of Branzas Design, thoroughly explores the visual and identity pillars of our nation. The result of rigorous research and over 30 years of practical experience in branding, the volume is not a mere critique, but a bold, applied, and results-oriented country project.
Beyond Forms Without Substance: The most important conclusion of the book is that no real branding effort is possible unless Romania abandons “forms without substance” and transitions from an extractive society—closed and resistant to innovation—to an inclusive one. As long as promotional campaigns (such as the infamous leaf logo) are merely artificial constructs, disconnected from the reality on the ground, they will fail to generate trust. Authenticity has become the modern consumer’s primary selection criterion.
A Pragmatic Path: The Tourism Brand as a Foundation. Bogdan Brînzaș argues that, for Romania, the shortest and most cost-effective path to a strong country brand passes through the construction of a tourism brand. Instead of competing in tourism markets where we hold no real advantages, the proposed strategy relies on a massive, exploitable resource available year-round: balneoclimateric, medical, and wellness tourism. Romania holds over 30% of Europe’s thermal and mineral springs. The complete rehabilitation of major resorts (such as Herculane, Techirghiol, Sovata, or Borsec) could generate a massive multiplier effect in the economy, attracting investments, creating jobs, and stimulating related industries.
“Forget Dracula, the truth is much more interesting!” The book dismantles tired clichés and proposes a new narrative: Romania is a country of fascinating contrasts, a place where the archaic blends with the modern, where wild nature is still untouched, and traditions remain alive. This is the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) we should communicate to visitors seeking immersive and honest experiences.
Brand Romania is more than a book about design and communication; it is an apolitical strategic guide, a rational radiography of the present, and a viable alternative to the policies of recent decades.
